Summary | 0000786: Slow to Load | ||||||||
Description | I don't know whether this is an actual bug, but it seems worth reporting. I have two copies of Netsurf on my original-spec RPC700 (RO 3.60) at present: 'Test Build (01 Jul 2004 23:30)' and 'Test Build (03 Mar 2005 22:35)' The older one loads "instantly", and once loaded runs well and seems stable. The later one (which I believe is the latest) takes three and a half minutes to load! However, once loaded, it runs well, and seems stable. Both versions have a file stderr in their folders. The July 2004 version's stderr is short: desktop/netsurf.c netsurf_init 62: version 'Test Build (01 Jul 2004 23:30)' desktop/netsurf.c netsurf_init 69: NetSurf on <riscos>, node <poolejpn.silver.ocn.ne.jp>, release <3.60>, version <2.02>, machine <arm-acorn> riscos/gui.c ro_gui_check_resolvers 375: Inet$Resolvers '203.139.161.40 203.139.160.74 ' The march 2005 version's stderr runs to over 250kB and commences thus: desktop/netsurf.c netsurf_init 68: version 'Test Build (03 Mar 2005 22:35)' desktop/netsurf.c netsurf_init 75: NetSurf on <riscos>, node <poolejpn.silver.ocn.ne.jp>, release <3.60>, version <2.02>, machine <arm-acorn> rufl_init.c rufl_init 102: old font manager rufl_init.c rufl_init 111: 508 faces, 99 families rufl_init.c rufl_load_cache 894: "AmTypeWrit.Medium2.Italic" not in font list rufl_init.c rufl_load_cache 894: "ANSI" not in font list rufl_init.c rufl_load_cache 894: "ANSI.Oblique" not in font list rufl_init.c rufl_load_cache 894: "gothic013.r48" not in font list rufl_init.c rufl_load_cache 894: "gothic013.r49" not in font list rufl_init.c rufl_load_cache 894: "gothic013.r4a" not in font list rufl_init.c rufl_load_cache 894: "gothic013.r4b" not in font list etc etc in similar vein until it gets to: rufl_init.c rufl_init 127: scanning 505 "Warsaw.UltraBold" rufl_init.c rufl_init 127: scanning 506 "Warsaw.UltraBold.Italic" rufl_init.c rufl_init 127: scanning 507 "WIMPSymbol" rufl_init.c rufl_init 154: 334 new charsets rufl_init.c rufl_save_cache 721: fwrite: 0x2: No such file or directory riscos/gui.c ro_gui_check_resolvers 422: Inet$Resolvers '203.139.161.40 203.139.160.74 ' the last part of which looks similar to the end of the July 2004 version's file. Following this, there's also a lot of what looks like logs of Web page accesses, but what's presumably taking up all the time during loading is the checking and and scanning of fonts (I've got the Nuffield Risc OS port of the Wadalab Japanese fonts on board, so there are rather a lot of them). I've attempted to upload the stderr file for the 03 mar 2005 version. At the moment, the slow loading means that the latest version of Netsurf is hard to use on my machine, so I'll stick with the earlier one for now.
